Author's Note: For the WFGE. Prompt F49 Any verse other than SR. A fairytale where Sir Bruce is sent to kill a monster that apparently is terrifying half the kingdom. If Bruce succeeds, he’ll marry the king’s daughter and inherit the country. The “monster” happens to be Kal, who’s alone, scared and quite harmless, but still unable to fully control his developing powers. Happy ending.. I hope the requester likes it! I'm sorry it got rushed towards the end but I wanted to finish it on time... Unbetaed, so point and I shall correct.
Sir Bruce rode though the deserted countryside upon his black stallion. All the people had long since fled, but curiously, the wild animals and birds were still present. They should have been the first to flee. Bruce frowned, looking about himself more warily.
This kingdom, Metropolis, had given out a call for aid, because of a monster that had set fear into it, brought people away from the country and into the towns with tales of a flying beast who could sprout flame and ice, whose strength could topple trees and hills.
So, the King had issued a proclamation, declaring that whoever could slay the monster would be given half the Kingdom and his daughter's - Lois, Bruce thought her name was, though he had never seen her - hand in marriage.
Bruce didn't need the Kingdom. He was, after all, a Prince himself. But he was curious about other Kingdoms, and the greatest swordsman of these lands. He would not just sit idly by while people, irregardless of if they were his own or not, suffered. So he had come to Metropolis and set out on this quest, to find and slay this monster that had caused so much terror.
But now that he was here... well, he couldn't explain it. He certainly wasn't feeling like he normally did in these situations, where he could feel the very evil of the monster. Here things were quiet, but... A watchful, but content happiness. Which made it all the odd that this was where the monster was supposed to dwell. Perhaps it had moved to higher ground? Into the mountains?
Bruce reined in his horse who stopped with a snort. There was still no feeling of evil. He looked around carefully, before casting a look to the sky. The sun would be setting within an hour. Nudging his horse into a walk, Bruce went in search of a campsite.
*****
The next morning dawned bright and fair, dew clung to the grass and leaves, and mist to the hills and mountains. Bruce looked up at them, considering. Winter was fast approaching. Maybe the monster really had gone into the mountains.
He looked around again, remembering maps he had studied of this area, then nodded to himself. The mountains it was.
He quickly quenched the fire and saddled his horse, then set off towards them.
*****
Dusk was falling. Bruce looked about warily. As he had gone deeper into the mountains, the mood had changed. Despair laced this place, handing over it like heavy snow clouds. There was still no evil. None at all. But Bruce still kept a hand upon his sword.
He was also curious over the fact that he had come across no traces of a monster like a dragon, no large footprints, no carcasses of sheep or other animals. But then he smelt fire. Or rather, smoke. Wood smoke.
Bruce frowned. What would a traveler be doing in these lands? It was well known there was a monster here and all the inhabitants had fled long ago.
Slowly, Bruce headed towards it, dismounting from his horse. As he drew closer, he could hear soft singing and he relaxed a little, though he didn't remove his hand from his sword.
He rounded a corner, then stopped in surprise. There was a small stream and a cave, cut into the mountain side. A small fire flickered by its entrance. There was such a feeling of peace here that Bruce felt tears come to his eyes. It was the total opposite of the despair surrounding this place.
But what took his breath away was the man tending to the fire, the most beautiful man Bruce had ever seen.
He froze, as if he had heard Bruce's careless gasp, and looked up at him with wide eyes. Bruce removed his hand from his sword and stepped forward. The man backed away, towards the entrance of the cave.
"Have no fear, friend. I will not harm you."
The man just shook his head frantically.
Bruce stopped. "I only wish to share your fire for the night," he explained, and saw the man relax a little.
"Will you allow me to do so?" Bruce continued, after there had been silence for a time. The other man looked wary still and Bruce sighed softly, for some reason bruised that he didn't trust him, and he wondered at it, never having minded what others thought of him before.
He cast a glance to the sky then around the man's... home? There was enough room for two men. "Then I will simply light a new fire over here," he said, gesturing to a spot, "since it is now too late for me to find another place to camp for the night."
The man made a startled noise, then turned away, fists clenching, but not before Bruce had seen the flash of fear upon his face. And he suddenly understood.
"I will not harm you, you have my word on that." Bruce swore quietly.
The man turned back to him. "You... Your word...?" His voice was soft and very quiet and Bruce detected a distinct accent to it, of the outlying farmlands of Metropolis.
Bruce just nodded in response. The man looked vastly surprised. "Now, may I share your fire?" He enquired, a hint of a smile upon his face.
The man looked at him a moment, and Bruce felt him gazing upon his soul in that time. "Yes. Yes, you are welcome to do so." The man smiled now and Bruce felt his breath catch for a second time.
"Thank you," he managed to whisper.
The other man just smiled at him again.
*****
Bruce had unsaddled his horse, then groomed and checked its hoofs for stones before letting him wonder around the fairly enclosed space. He had felt the other man's eyes upon him, felt him relax even more when he saw how he was treating his horse.
Bruce sat down near the fire, feeling its welcoming warmth as night truly fell. The other man was watching him still, but when Bruce looked up he looked away and Bruce thought he saw a blush stain his face.
"What is your name?" He asked, hoping for another glimpse of those eyes, and was rewarded when the man looked back to him.
"Clark."
Bruce smiled. "I am Bruce." He didn't bother with any of his titles, they did not really hold meaning here.
There was silence for some time, and Bruce started to eat a portion of his stored food, Clark apologising for already having eaten.
"Why are you here, Bruce?" Clark eventually asked, some hesitation to his voice.
Bruce glanced around, then took a drink of water. "I have heard there is a monster here. I am hunting it." He started as Clark suddenly shot to his feet. "What is wrong?"
"You... you are here for the... the m-monster?"
Bruce nodded. Clark backed away from him and Bruce frowned, standing. Why was Clark reacting like this? "I will not harm you," he repeated his earlier words, his oath.
But Clark just laughed, full of bitterness and some hysteria. "Won't you?" He whispered. And showed Bruce just what - just who - the monster really was.
*****
Bruce was gazing intently into the fire. The flames leaped up when Clark tossed another log upon it.
It was now quite late and the stars were twinkling down coldly upon them. Neither of them moved, or said a word.
"You're not a monster." Bruce finally broke the silence.
Clark looked at him, indescribable emotions on his face; hope and fear and agony and relief.
"You're not," Bruce repeated and Clark's shoulders sagged.
"Then what am I?"
"You're... different, yes. Maybe someone cursed you. But you're not a monster."
"But how do you know I'm not-"
"Clark. When I was traveling here, do you know what I felt?" Clark shook his head, looking at him with wide eyes. "I felt peace Clark. Peace. The animals weren't scared."
"But the people-"
"Are often less sensible about these things. I wouldn't be surprised if someone got bitten by a lizard or snake and started to claim that some terrible monster had attacked them."
That startled a laugh out of Clark and Bruce found himself smiling.
"I still can't control them. All the... things I can do. It just... overwhelms me and the next thing I know... well. That's why I came here. It's relatively isolated, so that I wouldn't hurt anyone."
"Have you ever hurt anyone?"
"...No. But that doesn't mean I won't."
Bruce sighed. He recognised that stubborn look all too well - he saw it often enough in his own reflection, after all. "Then we will work on how you can control them."
"We?"
Bruce nodded. "If you think I'm going to leave you up here by yourself then you are sorely mistaken."
"But..."
Bruce gave Clark his own stubborn look and Clark sighed, then smiled, a small delighted smile. "Thank you."
Bruce nodded, looking back to the fire, but the image of Clark's smile still haunted him. "It's late. We should get some rest," was all he said, then carefully laid out his blanket and tried to fall asleep.
*****
Many weeks passed. Together, Bruce and Clark worked on his powers, on how Clark could control them. And he did. He was able, slowly, to get greater control over them, to start to use them for good, such as when a mountain goat became stuck after it was too adventurous. Clark was able to locate and it free it.
He couldn't stop smiling after.
Bruce found his enthusiasm to be contagious and couldn't help but smile with him.
Winter settled in and they had to move down the mountain a little, for even with Clark's abilities to bring forth fire it was still too cold, though Clark had admitted that the weather didn't bother him at all.
They spent their nights gazing at the stars, talking, telling each other about their lives, how Clark had been the son of a farmer, living on the outskirts of Metropolis as Bruce had guessed. He, in turn, told Clark about Gotham, though he didn't say he was a Prince. It just didn't seem important.
And so the time passed. When Spring came, Clark was able to fully control his powers, though it remained a mystery where they came from, a mystery that Bruce vowed to solve one day. But for now it was enough for Clark that he could control them. He couldn't just stay up in the mountains the rest of his life, he said.
So Bruce started to train him how to fight with a sword, how to be a knight. And all the time that their gazes lingered upon the other, it would get harder to look away. Bruce almost forgot completely about his quest, about his promise to the King of Metropolis, though Gotham haunted his thoughts often.
But he could not return with Clark, for who knew what people would do if they learned he was the 'monster'?
A plan started to form in Bruce's mind, and he smiled.
*****
The people started to come back, when Spring arrived. Clark and Bruce looked down on them from the mountains and knew the time had come for them to leave. Which they did, with regret.
But not before they had spoken of many things, finally voiced the longing and desire that been evident in their gazes for so long. Voiced the love that had been present since they had met, and all truths were finally revealed under a starry sky.
*****
When Sir Bruce rode into Metropolis castle, many marveled, for he had been feared lost over the long Winter, when he had not returned from slaying the monster.
And they marveled more at the man by his side, Sir Kal, made a knight by Sir Bruce's - Prince Bruce's - own hand, for never before had he made someone a knight.
When he was asked, Sir Bruce just said that he had spent the Winter in search of the monster, but had never been able to find even a trace of it. Sir Kal, he said, he had met on the same quest, and he had found the same: no trace of the monster whatsoever.
The Prince then said that he must return to Gotham. And Sir Kal went with him.
Soon, they became legends. For wherever evil was, Prince Bruce or Sir Kal were there to stop it, Sir Kal spending most of his time on the borders of Metropolis and Gotham. And the people there loved him. And if it were sometimes rumoured that he could do things no other man could, they were ignored, for all that met him knew what a kind and noble soul he was.
He visited Gotham and its Prince often, and it was often marked how happier the Prince was when Sir Kal was near.
And as for Bruce and Clark? Well, they lived happily ever after.

Date: 2009-12-23 11:36 pm (UTC)I liked the detail of Bruce noticing that the animals hadn't fled, and that peace seemed to hang over the forest. I love how the boys were attracted to each other and spent the winter together and finally proclaimed their love, and how they lived happily ever after as Prince and Knight. :)
The ending didn't feel rushed to me at all. Good job! :)

Oh, that's a wonderful turn of phrase, I loved it. This whole story just made me smile--Bruce's intuitive understanding of the land and its cues, his line about how people are often scared of the unknown but the animals know better, the two of them fighting side by side at the end--it's all great. Thank you!

I had a lot of fun writing about Bruce's understanding of the land, even if it did feel a bit odd to be writing about Metropolis in that regard and not Gotham, lol! And the line about the animals knowing better too. :)
Thank you for your comment, Jen! :D

Date: 2009-12-25 06:47 pm (UTC)That was so much Bruce like.
There was such a feeling of peace here that Bruce felt tears come to his eyes. It was the total opposite of the despair surrounding this place.
You amazingly described Bruce’s wandering trying to find the monster. And the description of the cave and Bruce’s feelings when he had found Clark were so wonderfully written.
But what took his breath away was the man tending to the fire, the most beautiful man Bruce had ever seen.
AWWWWW, I loved that. :)
The man looked at him a moment, and Bruce felt him gazing upon his soul in that time. "Yes. Yes, you are welcome to do so." The man smiled now and Bruce felt his breath catch for a second time
Perfect moment (and the smile :)).
Bruce sat down near the fire, feeling its welcoming warmth as night truly fell. The other man was watching him still, but when Bruce looked up he looked away and Bruce thought he saw a blush stain his face.
Blushing Clark – that was so cute. :)
Bruce glanced around, then took a drink of water. "I have heard there is a monster here. I am hunting it." He started as Clark suddenly shot to his feet. "What is wrong?"
Poor Clark. He had to be so scared. *Hugs him*
"Clark. When I was traveling here, do you know what I felt?" Clark shook his head, looking at him with wide eyes. "I felt peace Clark. Peace. The animals weren't scared."
Bruce said it so well. :)
"I still can't control them. All the... things I can do. It just... overwhelms me and the next thing I know... well. That's why I came here. It's relatively isolated, so that I wouldn't hurt anyone."
Exactly Clark like – he would never want to hurt anyone.
Bruce nodded. "If you think I'm going to leave you up here by yourself then you are sorely mistaken."
Loved that. :)
Together, Bruce and Clark worked on his powers, on how Clark could control them. And he did.
Bruce helping Clark to get his powers under control - that was perfect!
But not before they had spoken of many things, finally voiced the longing and desire that been evident in their gazes for so long. Voiced the love that had been present since they had met, and all truths were finally revealed under a starry sky.
AWWWW! I was so pleased reading this. :)
The Prince then said that he must return to Gotham. And Sir Kal went with him.
Sir Kal – nice. :)
And the people there loved him. And if it were sometimes rumoured that he could do things no other man could, they were ignored, for all that met him knew what a kind and noble soul he was.
I was glad for this. Clark needs the love of people. And he deserves it! :)
And as for Bruce and Clark? Well, they lived happily ever after.
I absolutely loved the ending! :)
That was so beautifully written story! I enjoyed it very much. You always write Bruce and Clark so wonderfully describing so well the love and understanding they have for each other!
Thank you for sharing this marvelous story!

He was! He was convinced that Bruce was going to try and kill him... *huggles him* Fortunately, Bruce could convince him that he wasn't!
I love the idea of Bruce helping Clark learn how to control his powers! I'm not sure why it appeals to me so much, lol. And Sir Kal! Yes. *grins*
I'm so happy you liked this story! Thank you for your wonderful comment, it made my day! :)
