He woke as she crawled into bed beside him, so exhausted she was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. Steve looked at her, her skin turned orange under the lights of the city, saw the dark bruise on her face, the cut on her lip and forehead.

The battle had been fierce, but she had won, of course. She always won.

A sad smile touched his lips and, very carefully, he reached out, brushed a damp strand of hair away from her face. He couldn't stand beside her when she fought - no mere mortal could. But he could be here for her now.

“Sleep, Angel. I’ll watch over you,” Steve whispered, and tucked the bed sheets up about them both.

Yay, I'm glad you got it! I love seeing the cardinals fly around the backyard here. Cardinals were my father's favorite type of bird. :)

I'm hoping to get yours sent off tomorrow! :) The cardinal is so bright - we don't have any bright coloured birds like that here, so I kinda envy all the lovely colourful ones you have! They must brighten up a dull day. :)

Ha, they are fun to watch, especially against snowbanks on a bright, sunny day after a storm when everything is exceedingly clear and sparkly. :)
