He woke as she crawled into bed beside him, so exhausted she was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. Steve looked at her, her skin turned orange under the lights of the city, saw the dark bruise on her face, the cut on her lip and forehead.

The battle had been fierce, but she had won, of course. She always won.

A sad smile touched his lips and, very carefully, he reached out, brushed a damp strand of hair away from her face. He couldn't stand beside her when she fought - no mere mortal could. But he could be here for her now.

“Sleep, Angel. I’ll watch over you,” Steve whispered, and tucked the bed sheets up about them both.

Oh, what a bittersweet, quiet moment, I love it. The image of him treasuring his chance to be the one that watches over her is very sweet...

Eee, what a lovely piece, Star! I always love the theme of Steve being there for Diana after a battle or when she returns from a place he can't go with her. Knowing that she has him to come home to is a great comfort for her.
