He woke as she crawled into bed beside him, so exhausted she was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. Steve looked at her, her skin turned orange under the lights of the city, saw the dark bruise on her face, the cut on her lip and forehead.
The battle had been fierce, but she had won, of course. She always won.
A sad smile touched his lips and, very carefully, he reached out, brushed a damp strand of hair away from her face. He couldn't stand beside her when she fought - no mere mortal could. But he could be here for her now.
“Sleep, Angel. I’ll watch over you,” Steve whispered, and tucked the bed sheets up about them both.
