We went to Hay-on-Wye yesterday. It's a little town right on the border of Wales and England and has over 30 bookshops!

The castle. The part covered with ivy is the original that was built between 1200 and 1211. Prince Llywelyn burned it 1231. It was rebuilt in 1233. The manor house was attached to it in the 1600's, and it has been damaged by two severe fires since then.

The manor house more clearly.

The countryside around Hay. You can see some of the bookshops as well.

On the way home we stopped at Tintern Abby. This is the Forrest of Dean and River Wye that is right next to the abby.

The abby itself. It was only the second Cistercain foundation in Britain, and the first in Wales.

That's pretty! I'm hoping to do a little sightseeing when I visit my Dad in Scotland at the end of the month. I usually go there and dont see anything more exciting than Tesco :)

Um, does Hay-on-Wye rhyme or does "Wye" sound like "why"?

I really like your first picture with the ivy creeping up the castle.

I've been to Tintern Abbey! It was like, six years ago at this point, but I remember it fondly.

Lovely pictures, Star!

30 bookshops? *swoon*

All this talk of the 'manor house' and the pic makes me think, boy, Bruce really is Old Money with Wayne Manor. ;)

And the pic kinda looks like Wayne Manor from the '60s TV show! *snicker*

Ohh! it looks like a really pretty place to visit! and.. so.. many... bookstores..!! how could you refrain yourself?

Is the Abbey in ruins? It looks like it doesn't have a roof.. it looks really cool! the town and the Manor (tehee! Wayne Manor!) and the Abbey have such a distinct style, it makes my underused imagination go rampage.

...and I know is totally silly, but I always do 'ooohh's when I see so much vegetation. I'm afraid I'm not used to lush surroundings :p
