We went to Hay-on-Wye yesterday. It's a little town right on the border of Wales and England and has over 30 bookshops!

The castle. The part covered with ivy is the original that was built between 1200 and 1211. Prince Llywelyn burned it 1231. It was rebuilt in 1233. The manor house was attached to it in the 1600's, and it has been damaged by two severe fires since then.

The manor house more clearly.

The countryside around Hay. You can see some of the bookshops as well.

On the way home we stopped at Tintern Abby. This is the Forrest of Dean and River Wye that is right next to the abby.

The abby itself. It was only the second Cistercain foundation in Britain, and the first in Wales.

I've been to Tintern Abbey! It was like, six years ago at this point, but I remember it fondly.

Tintern Abbey is so pretty! We go there about twice a year... it's one of my favorite places. :)

Date: 2007-07-13 04:55 pm (UTC)30 bookshops? *swoon*
All this talk of the 'manor house' and the pic makes me think, boy, Bruce really is Old Money with Wayne Manor. ;)
And the pic kinda looks like Wayne Manor from the '60s TV show! *snicker*

*giggles*
Is that what Wayne Manor looked like in the 60's show? I haven't really any of it... this manor house is half falling down so I hope it isn't! LOL

Date: 2007-07-14 12:17 am (UTC)*snicker* No, it wasn't half-falling-down, but the architectural style was similar.

Date: 2007-07-16 12:54 am (UTC)Is the Abbey in ruins? It looks like it doesn't have a roof.. it looks really cool! the town and the Manor (tehee! Wayne Manor!) and the Abbey have such a distinct style, it makes my underused imagination go rampage.
...and I know is totally silly, but I always do 'ooohh's when I see so much vegetation. I'm afraid I'm not used to lush surroundings :p

Date: 2007-07-16 07:40 pm (UTC)The Abbey is in ruins, yes. They're currently... doing something with them... and have been for the past few years. I think they might be making them safer. LOL, yes, Wayne Manor!
The vegetation is very green around there! And, lol, I have a such a... cliched picture of Mexico... It's all desert and Cacti! :P

Date: 2007-07-16 08:00 pm (UTC)No one rides donkeys, though. Or hangs out on the shade of cacti. That's just nonsense.

Date: 2007-07-17 07:17 pm (UTC)I imagine that hanging out in the shade of a cacti would be rather... prickly. LOL
