Clark closed his eyes for a brief moment, getting control of his hearing once more. It was always difficult, at parties, with so many people. Difficult to filter them all out, so he could hear if people needed him, yet still listen to the conversation, as well.
Clark didn't like parties.
At least he could be in the background for this one, the almost invisible reporter, not the alien superhero.
Laughter broke though his thoughts, and Clark opened his eyes, slightly guiltily. Bruce was in the centre of a group of giggling people, laugh high and foolish over something stupid he had said.
Clark wondered how the people around him didn't see the tense lines of Bruce's muscles, see how tired he was, how much Bruce wanted to be away from these people. Because of course, Bruce Wayne was always, always, the centre of attention of every party. Even when he wasn't there, conversations focused on him.
Clark looked away, unable to watch the sight. At least people generally kept a certain distance away from Superman, who could fly away at any moment, with any excuse, because who wouldn't believe Superman?
He walked around the edges of the party, talking to a few people, making notes, watching. Bruce had disappeared, and Clark could feel that his own energy levels were dangerously low. He'd escape in a minute. Just like they did at every party.

Bruce staggered as the heavy, carved stone door finally opened after he had spent what seemed like an eternity trying to open it. But he was inside now; his quest almost completed.
It was dark inside, only broken by cut beams of light, from what must have been windows, cut very high in the stone of the chamber. The air smelt old.
Bruce was wary as he stepped further inside, wary of hidden traps. But, as he made his way further into the chamber, he became more confident. He had come too far to be stopped now!
He rounded a corner, looking out carefully from behind a pillar, and saw him. Bruce smiled, and walked to the figure seated on the throne. His eyes were closed, his hair dark, his skin pale, clothed in red and blue. Chains of a glowing green kept him tied to the chair.
But Bruce touched his hands and they fell away, as did the rest of the world when the freed man took a deep breath, like he was awaking from a long sleep, and opened his eyes.

Later, when the villain is taken away, into custody, Batman and Superman nod at each other, and go their separate ways. But they are smiling, small secret smiles, and their eyes are alight, whether masked or free to the world, because each knows what the other saw in them.
And when they meet still later, their smiles deepen as they look in each others eyes. And see the truth reflected there, as it will always be.

Date: 2009-11-11 01:54 am (UTC)The weariness of parties and the unusual little scenario in the second one was written with such an understanding of our boys!
My favorite lines:

Date: 2009-11-12 03:57 pm (UTC)Awesome story! I liked the way you described Clark working with his super hearing!
And you perfectly captured the difference between him being able to avoid an attention of people as „invisible reporter“ or flying away as Superman and Bruce being always the centre of attention! That was excellently written!
He'd escape in a minute. Just like they did at every party.
Wonderful ending! :)
Title: The Eyes of Truth
But Bruce touched his hands and they fell away, as did the rest of the world when the freed man took a deep breath, like he was awaking from a long sleep, and opened his eyes.
That was great! Excellent description of Bruce on the rescue mission.
But they are smiling, small secret smiles, and their eyes are alight, whether masked or free to the world, because each knows what the other saw in them.
I loved it! The smile, the eyes and the knowledge – that was amazing!
And when they meet still later, their smiles deepen as they look in each others eyes. And see the truth reflected there, as it will always be.
Again - perfect ending!
I enjoyed both the stories a lot!
Thanks for sharing. :)

*grins* I had a lot of fun writing that one, and well... just how well they know each other! *hearts Bruce and Clark*

Date: 2009-11-14 07:22 pm (UTC)I love Clark's slightly guilty relief at being there as Clark instead of Superman, knowing he can fade into the background a little.
LOL, could you see me projecting there a lot? :p
I really liked writing the second one, having it kinda sorta a fairy tale to begin with. Hee!
*glomps* I'm so glad you liked these, Jen, thank you for commenting! :D

Date: 2009-11-14 08:07 pm (UTC)The second I liked because I could feel the relief in Bruce finding clark and then the hidden smiles when they parted ways. Very nice.

Date: 2009-11-15 06:57 pm (UTC)The first one I like how observant clark is to bruce and the little nuances he holds. The tightness in his muscles. It really show how much he means to him.
Clark is definitely watching Bruce very closely there, lol. *pets him*
Their little smiles in the second story was my favorite part, I think. :)
