Author's Note: For [livejournal.com profile] arch_schatten who asked for Tim, Cass and Ace getting caught in the rain. I hope you like it, Mina! Unbetaed, so point and I shall correct. :)

Tim looked up at the sky. Grey, foreboding clouds had gathered, reflected dully in the skyscrapers; in the windows of the Gothic buildings. The gargoyles seemed to be grinning, as fog started to twine about, and Tim smiled to himself.

This was why he loved Gotham. There was simply nowhere else like this in the world, nowhere else you could truly live and love and cry and die. Every other city, every other place seemed fake in comparison, all cardboard sets and peeling paint.

But Gotham was real, would devour your heart and soul and dreams if you let her, and leave you broken and insane, whole and pure if you strayed too far.

Cass was walking silently next to him, people moving around her, out of her way without really realizing, prey reacting unconsciously to a predator amongst them. Tim didn't miss anything with his eyes - there, that man, he was a pickpocket; that woman was selling drugs - and he made mental notes to pay them each a visit later that night.

Cass was doing the same, reading the body language, picking up on things that he was missing, wouldn't be able to see with even years of intense training, reacting to what she saw before the person even realized they were being watched.

They were Bats off duty, but they never truly were, never would truly want to be.

But it didn't stop Cass from looking around curiously, even as she assessed for threats. She had hardly ever seen Gotham from the ground like this, of course. Thinking about it, Tim was surprised by how little he saw Gotham from the ground now, too used to seeing it from above, gliding through the night sky, or blurring around him when he was on his bike or in the Batmobile.

There was a tug on the lead held loosely in his hand - Ace wanted to go into Robinson Park. Cass was angling her body to enter through the cast iron gate in the black railed fence before Ace had even made his request known.

Smiling, Tim allowed himself to be walked into the park, feeling the wind pulling and pushing at him, throwing his hair into disarray, though Cass had it worse than him. It was quieter in the park, which was good - there were too many people on the streets, too many tourists obscuring the real Gotham from view.

The park was real, full of lovers and friends and families and lost souls. Sometimes the tourists came, but they always left quickly, to see something else shiney and dangerous. The trees rustled, some leaves falling. It wasn't Fall yet, but Summer had been non-existent, and Winter was coming early.

They walked under the trees, Ace snuffling at the leaves, pouncing on some of them, and Cass was smiling at them both.

They came out from the avenue of trees to see the reservoir, dully reflecting the sky, and it suddenly began to rain. There were distant shrieks of surprise from the stray tourists, from the people who didn't, and never would understand Gotham, and Tim laughed, feeling himself get drenched already, his hair molding to his face. Cass laughed too, her dark hair clinging to her face in long, thick strands, Ace barking as he joined them.

They were Children of Gotham, who was more real, more broken than anywhere else, who had jagged swords, ready to cut you to pieces at the slightest misstep.

They were Children of Gotham, laughing in the rain, more real than anywhere else in the world.

You paint such a wonderful image with this -- dark and grim in a certain way, but wonderful. You really did a great job of showing us how they see Gotham, and how it "feels" to them. Excellent!!

I loved the image of Tim and Cass watching people and thinking about Gotham. And their view on Gotham from a new angle – from the ground – that was an amazing idea. :)

They were Children of Gotham, laughing in the rain, more real than anywhere else in the world.
Tim, Cass and Ace (YAY for Ace in this story :D) walking and laughing in the rain – that was awesome!

Beautiful story!
Thanks for sharing. :)

I really love that image too! It suddenly hit me that they probably wouldn't see Gotham all that much from the ground... I'm so glad you liked that detail, I really enjoyed drawing it out! :D

And Ace! Ace needs to be in more stories. *nods*

I do love the way this spins out. The POV is perfect, the observations so dead on for them.

Ooooh, off-duty (but never really off-duty) Tim and Cass are delightful! I love Tim's realization that he's not used to seeing Gotham from the ground, and his enjoyment of it all.

Every other city, every other place seemed fake in comparison, all cardboard sets and peeling paint.

I really love the fierce love of Gotham you've built into this, and Tim's sense of its reality above all others. It's fantastic!

I had so much fun writing them wandering around Gotham and being off duty but not. :) And it suddenly hit me that Tim must not see Gotham from the ground all that often anymore! *pets him*

And Gotham! I so enjoyed writing about Gotham again. *hearts the city*

Wonderful view of Gotham (your specialty) and Tim's observations. That was a nice angle, him realizing that he usually saw the city from above or whizzing past. Cass' body language as predator among prey and already angling for the park before Ace could let his wish be known is absolute perfection. :)

Laughing in the rain! Nice! :)

*grins* Well, Gotham will always have a special place in my heart! :p

I'm really glad you like Tim realizing that he doesn't see Gotham from the ground anymore, and Cass being a predator among prey! That was one of my favorite parts, so I'm so happy you picked up on it! :D

!!!! eeeee!!!! so awesome!!!

Oh, I love everything about this, Star! it's so beautiful! they are.. so much bigger than life, so alive and full of energy.. so, so beautiful, I love this so much!

But Gotham was real, would devour your heart and soul and dreams if you let her, and leave you broken and insane, whole and pure if you strayed too far.

I love the contradictions there, or, what sound like contradictions but make so much sense for Gotham. 'Broken and insane, whole and pure' is such a wonderful turn of phrase, and it describes what Gotham does to her children so well. They have to be broken to be remade, I guess?

They were Children of Gotham, laughing in the rain, more real than anywhere else in the world.

Yes. :D :D They are so true, you know? so right. And in Gotham, they are so right that they have to be real! the imaginarium is too strong for them not to be. They are alive in some strange way.

The writing here is gorgeous, and I loved every line of it. Thank you so much for this!! :D :D

Eeee! *dances* I'm so glad you liked it, Mina! :D

I had so much fun writing this, I think I was smirking the whole time. Hee! *hearts Tim and Cass and Ace and Gotham*

That was one of my favorite lines, so I'm so pleased you picked it up! They're contradictions, but they make sense for Gotham! Yeah, they have to be - I guess everyone has to be - broken to be remade anew. You can't have any healing without pain.

Yes. :D :D They are so true, you know? so right. And in Gotham, they are so right that they have to be real! the imaginarium is too strong for them not to be. They are alive in some strange way.

They're more alive than other people of Gotham, because she has touched them and marked them as hers... Hee! *hearts Gotham*

Thank you so much for requesting this story, Mina! I so enjoyed writing it (Gotham, eeeee!!!) and I'm so happy you like it! :D *glomps*
