Author's Note: It's the Sleeping Beauty!Bruce fic! *grin* I hoped it's liked. As usual, not betaed, so if there are any mistakes, point and I shall correct! I am also behind on flist, but I will try and catch up.
Clark was in the middle of doing research for his latest article when it happened. Lois had just started to demand the spelling of a word, when abruptly, everything froze. Everything except Clark, that is. He turned his head around, gazing at the now silent newsroom. This was... strange. The only times something like this had happened before was... Clark rose from his chair, doing a quick calculation. 90 days...
"Mxyzptlz!"
"Yes?"
Clark jumped as the imp suddenly appeared in front of him. "What have you done?"
"You know, that outfit does nothing for you. You look much better in the suit, gaudy as it may be."
In a flash, Clark was Superman. "Mxyzptlz," he growled.
"What? I try and add some colour to your life, help you figure out where your heart lies, and this is the thanks I get? Hmph."
Superman blinked. "What?" That second part didn't sound like Mxyzptlz at all.
The imp rolled his eyes. "You get denser every time I visit you." Mxy snapped his fingers, and suddenly they were outside the Daily Planet. Everyone there was frozen too. A man and woman were bumping into each other, droplets from the woman's coffee that had started to spill caught in the air between them, glistening in the sun.
"Now for the fun and games!" Mxy said,
Superman turned, and glared at the imp. "Mxyzptlz! What have you done?" He repeated his earlier question.
"I told you. I'm helping you figure out where your heart lies."
"I already know where my heart lies."
"That's what you think."
"What? Mxyzptlz," he growled again, advancing on the imp. He was fed up of this now.
"Sorry Supes! Gotta run! But before I go... here! Have this on me!"
A brief flash of light and his costume was gone, replaced instead with... armour? Kal looked down at himself. He was encased, head to toe in shining armour. A sword was strapped to his waist. A shield was upon his left arm, the symbol of the house of El emblazoned upon it. A rich red cape hung from his shoulders, moving slightly as he did. Kal turned, and found a snow white horse in front of him, covered with ornaments that matched his armour. Kal's mouth fell open.
"Mxyzptlz! What kind of game is this? Free these people now!"
"Only you can do that, Supes. By learning where your heart lies."
Kal blinked, and Mxy disappeared. Where his heart lies? The horse snorted. It was the only other thing moving. Everything else was still frozen. Kal reached out, and caught the reins, absentmindedly stroking the horses neck.
What on earth was he supposed to do now?
***************************************
Kal re-entered the Daily Planet. He had tied the horse to a nearby lamp post. 'Where his heart lies', well, that was easy enough. He finally reached the floor where he had been working before Mxyzptlz showed up. There was Lois. He reached out and touched her. Nothing happened. Blushing slightly, he kissed her. Still nothing. Kal frowned under his helmet.
Wait a minute... this was reminding him of something... of a fairy tale. Sleeping Beauty. In some versions the princess had been the only one asleep, but in others, the entire castle had fallen into an enchanted slumber, frozen in time, until the prince had come, and awoken the princess with a kiss.
But that meant that he had been recast as the prince in this new version of the tale. Who was the princess? It wasn't Lois. Kal didn't know how he felt about that. Mxyzptlz had said he needed to discover where his heart lied. But how could he find...? Of course. The horse. Shaking his head, Kal made his way outside.
****************************************
The horse was taking him to Gotham. Kal had no control over its movements. Once he had mounted, the horse had started cantering, and nothing he could do could slow it down or alter their direction. It was eerie, the way he and the horse where the only moving things. Everywhere around them, people and things were frozen. Kal swallowed. So far, by his best estimate, it was late afternoon. The sun hadn't moved from it's mid morning position. It seemed that the whole universe was frozen until he could find 'where his heart lies'.
Kal was used to the feeling of responsibility, but this... He didn't care who his love was at this point, just as long as he could wake them up somehow, and make everything come back to life. The horse was still cantering along at a steady pace. Kal sighed. He could only hope that Gotham was his final destination, and that he didn't need to travel any further.
******************************************
Kal swallowed hard. They had finally reached Gotham. Everyone was frozen here too. Gotham somehow looked worse than Metropolis. Maybe it was the feeling of despair that was frozen in time. Maybe it was just how dark Gotham looked, even with the unmoving sun shining upon it. But maybe, it was just the knowledge that he would never fit in here. That he didn't belong.
Kal gazed at the people, frozen like statues in the middle of their day. He wondered where Bruce was and what he had been doing when all this happened. He was suddenly engulfed in shadow. Kal looked up. Wayne Tower. It loomed over all the other buildings, tall and proud. Kal felt a brief smile come over his face.
He frowned as a sudden thought struck him. He hadn't expected his love to live in Gotham. It felt... strange that they did. He only knew a few people here, and well... Kal blushed under his helmet. He would be lying if he said that he had never thought of Bruce that way, but Bruce wasn't interested in him. He sighed. Bruce had been very busy lately. Two-Face had broken out of Arkham again, and it had taken Bruce some time to track him down. He knew for a fact that Bruce wouldn't have slept at all these past few days. He was so stubborn!
Kal shook his head. They were in the northern side of Gotham now. Kal frowned again. He hoped the horse would stop soon. He had had enough of staring at frozen people.
********************************************
Kal gaped as he neared Wayne Manor. The entirety of it was covered in rose bushes. They were so thick he could hardly see through them, and he was only just able to make out the roof. The horse finally slowed and came to a stop. This meant that Wayne Manor was the castle... but... Kal thoughts stuttered to a halt, except for one. Well, Bruce was called the Prince of Gotham.
He couldn't believe it. He just could not.
How was he supposed to get through the thorns? He couldn't fly over them, or burn them away with his heat vision, he knew that instinctively. But how was he...? Kal's eyes widened as he remembered how in some versions of Sleeping Beauty, the prince had to battle a dragon before gaining access to the princess inside her tower. The ground suddenly shook. The horse snorted in alarm. Kal turned and wished he hadn't.
A large, silver dragon had appeared. It reared back on its haunches and opened its mouth. Kal gasped in alarm. Fire nearly engulfed him, the horse moving just in time. He glanced over his shoulder. His cape was singed. The dragon roared, angered at having missed him as it turned for another attempt. Kal swallowed, and drew his sword, raising his other arm, hoping the shield would protect him.
The horse reared, and charged. The dragon roared again, belching fire, but it was too slow. Kal drew in his breath as the horse danced under the dragon's body, deftly avoiding the dragons claws. Kal winced as he positioned them just under the dragon's breast. There was the mark that all dragons have: the tiny spot where they have no scales protecting them.
"I'm sorry, but I'm sure you aren't actually real," he apologised, before stabbing the spot with his sword as hard as he could. The dragon roared in agony above him. The horse darted out from under it before it could crush them as it fell to the ground. The dragon roared again, loud enough that Kal hoped the windows in the manor wouldn't smash. It writhed on the ground in its death throes, gorging the ground with it's claws, tail sweeping about. It's roars were pitiful now, before finally, they stopped altogether, it's head crashing to the ground with a mighty thud.
Kal stared at it for some moments, breathing heavily. The horse snorted and moved so they were facing the manor again. A small path had formed between the mass of thorns. The horse walked up to it, eventually coming to a halt outside the heavy wooden doors.
Kal slowly dismounted. The horse snorted again. He made his way up the steps before the doors opened of their own accord. Kal swallowed. Hesitantly, he made his way inside. He couldn't see anyone.
"Bruce?" He called out, knowing he would most likely not receive any response. It was worth a try, though. If anyone could have broken out of this of their own accord, it would be Bruce. There was only silence. Kal sighed.
He made his way up the staircase, gasping in surprise when he nearly walked into Alfred. He was carrying a silver tray, laden with breakfast. Kal edged around him. Finally, he came to Bruce's bedroom. Hesitantly, he opened the door. Bruce was lying in bed, seemingly asleep.
Slowly, Kal made his way to his bedside, removing his helmet as he did so. He placed a hand on the bed, next to Bruce's shoulder. He leaned over, and gathered his courage before kissing Bruce very gently. He heard Bruce take a deep breath under him, felt him sleepily respond to the kiss. Slowly, Kal pulled away. Beneath him, Bruce opened his eyes. Kal's ears were filled with everything suddenly returning to life. He smiled.
"Kal? What are you doi... wearing" Bruce's voice was sleepy at first, but lurched suddenly into alertness.
"It's... a long story."
Bruce narrowed his eyes at him. "Tell me the short version - for now."
Kal blushed, and looked away. "We were recast in Sleeping Beauty, with you as the princess, and me as the prince."
Bruce stared at him. Kal blushed deeper. Bruce tilted his head at him, before moving suddenly, and capturing his lips in a passionate kiss. Kal gasped, before moaning into the kiss, and lowering Bruce back to the mattress.
Neither of them noticed Alfred raise an eyebrow in the doorway, say "It's about time," and then close the door.

Date: 2007-06-11 08:00 pm (UTC)I love fairytales, and this one was lovely! Sleeping Beauty also happens to be one of my favorites. ;)
I love fairy tales too!! *grin* Sleeping Beauty is one of my favorites as well.
I love knightly Kal and adored the image of Wayne Manor as the enchanted castle. And, yes, Bruce is the Prince of Gotham, so it all worked out! :)
LOL, yes it did!
Clark I think, will definitely find himself more at home in Gotham now. ;)
And Alfred is amazing. :D
