Title: Three Unspoken Words

Author's Note: For the wonderful, wonderful [livejournal.com profile] mithen! Happy Birthday!

It was not the same John Watson who met her for coffee.

Nothing had been the same since- Molly bit her lip. John tried to smile at her, and she felt her own smile wobble alarmingly.

John had been limping as he had approached the table.

“How... how are you?” She asked, falteringly, immediately felt stupid. It was clear how John was. She bit her lip again.

“I’m...” John didn’t finish; he raised his hand to cover his eyes. It trembled.

Molly closed her own eyes, blinked back her own tears. She would tell him. Sherlock had promised that he would let John know the truth, that she wouldn’t have to lie to him.

Molly opened her eyes, about to speak - then her eye was caught by a man behind John, baseball cap covering his hair and hiding his eyes in shadow. But for a brief moment those eyes had been unshadowed, had met her own...

She blinked back new tears. She had told Sherlock she was good at watching people, had always been a little jealous of John, for his easy closeness to the man she loved.

She wasn’t jealous anymore. The anguish on John’s face, the pain that had been in Sherlock’s eyes, as he had shaken his head, for that brief instant...

She couldn’t speak, couldn’t say a word.

So she simply reached out and took John’s hand and tried not to hate herself too much, knowing that with only three little words she could release all of John’s pain.

I--oh, my heart stopped. *wibbles*

Oh my, you capture her voice so well! The hesitation, the constant feeling that she's said something obvious or stupid (this may be why I love her, lol).

And what a painful little flash of understanding for her, I can so see that in the cinematography of the show, the little closeups and slowing-down feeling as she takes it all in...

Ow, ow, my heart aches for all three of them, and this is really beautiful.

It was... rather easy to channel Molly! I really enjoyed writing her, actually, it didn't feel hard at all. And her thoughts of John (he was limping again, I was just being so mean) and Sherlock and the terrible situation they're all in... *pets them all*

Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Jen, I'm so glad you liked this!

I must admit that I don't know the fandom, although I've heard nothing but good things about it. (I hope to get an opportunity to watch it soon - I don't get any channel it's on and I don't have Netflix, but I'm sure this series will be more easily available soon in my neck of the woods, given its purported popularity!) After watching its two lead actors in The Hobbit AND Star Trek Into Darkness and seeing how wonderful they both are, how can Sherlock be anything other than brilliant? I wish I knew it now!

That being said, I enjoyed your drabble here quite a bit - it told quite a story all on its own, and like always, your writing style is superb!

Happy Birthday, Star! I hope you have a great one!

*hugs*

Pax :-)

I hope you get to see it soon, it's rather awesome! The actors are incredible, and the way they play off each other is just... so, so amazing (and heartbreaking, at times!).

I'm glad you liked this little story anyway, even without knowing the fandom - that's quite a compliment indeed! And thank you so much for taking the time to comment! *hugs back*

Beautifuly written Star. :)
I liked the way you described Molly's inner thoughts and her feelings about John and Sherlock. Oh and it was all so hard for all of them. Sad but beautiful!
Thank you very much for sharing this.

Thank you, Lis! I really enjoyed writing this story, even though it was so sad - it was nice to write different characters, for a change! I'm very fond of Molly...

Thank you for commenting! :)
