Kal's laugh was almost a chuckle, an amused, alien sound, more aimed at humanity in general, how young they were, like children, than at whatever was humorous. Superman's laugh was polite, never too long or short, the perfect laugh for that situation. Clark's laugh was self-conscious, much less often heard than Kal's or Superman's, and only around people who he really cared about.
Diana's laugh was soft, almost like Kal's, at the youngness of humanity, or sad at how much they still had to learn, how much they had lost. The Princess' laugh was like Superman's; polite, yet truer, secure in the knowledge that her sisters would understand why she was laughing, what had amused her. Wonder Woman's laugh was a combination of them all, yet when she went to battle, her laugh became fierce and full of joy, mocking the foes who thought they could best her.
Batman didn't laugh, of course; when he did it was mocking, making people - criminals and innocents alike - shiver in fear and run, which would only make him laugh more. Brucie's laugh was often heard, high pitched, almost giggles, over whatever had captured his fickle attention, or when he was drunk, the alcohol making everything humorous. Bruce's laugh was the least heard of them all, often only snorts or a quirking of his lips; only a handful of people could truly make him laugh.
But when they came together, Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman, or Kal-El, Diana and Bruce, or Clark Kent, The Princess and Brucie, their laughs all became true, no masks, no need to measure them, control them, safe in the knowledge that they would each understand.

Date: 2009-02-09 10:39 pm (UTC)I love the way you detail the different laughs of all three (especially love Diana's battle laugh) and how all three feel comfortable with each other.
BTW, you read Diana perfectly in her battle attitude.

Date: 2009-02-22 07:12 pm (UTC)I did have a lot of fun thinking about all the different ways they could laugh, how they used them as masks - I think Brucie giggling was my favorite one, hee! :p
