How old is the laptop? And does it still have a warranty? If so, I'd get a replacement battery from them.
If not...well it's going to suck but you probably will have to replace it. Unfortunately laptop batteries don't last forever so depending on how old it is, you might need to get a new one.
I doubt that there is much that your brother could do except look at it and go, "Yeah it's broke."
The only other thing that I could think of to suggest is cleaning the contacts where the battery and the laptop connect. There is a slight (slim) chance that it's so dirty that it's interfering with the connection between the two but you never can tell.
