Drabble: Friendship

It was odd, Bruce thought, that people believed him to be incapable of having friends. Of being someone's friend. Of course, he sometimes had those doubts himself. Of wondering why anyone would willingly spend their time trying to get through to him, the real him, not the air-headed playboy or the paranoid Bat.

But why a loner like him would want these people around... he had become accustomed to their presence. Alfred was always at his side, of course, and he had a tentative, not quite fully trusting friendship with James Gordon, but with Clark, and then Diana... He had found acceptance.

Perhaps it wasn't so odd that it came from two such unusual and strange people themselves, an alien and an immortal Amazon. Maybe it was even better, since they could understand him, understand how sometimes he didn't feel human at all.

He felt... disconnected from everyone else, watching them, seeing how... complete their lives were, wondering if he gave that same impression, because he certainly didn't feel like it. He didn't feel... like he supposed everyone else did. Like they felt, according to everyone else.

But maybe everyone felt like this, and when he watched them, rushing back and forth in their busy lives, they were just trying to distract themselves from how empty they felt, how... incomplete they were.

It was better than doubting his sanity, at least.

But when he was with Clark and Diana he felt more complete, didn't have to pretend with them, hide behind any masks, he could just be. They didn't mock him, they accepted him with open arms and warm smiles.

He only hoped that he was as much of a friend, as much of a comfort to them as they were to him.
