Clark was in the library. It was one of his favorite rooms in the castle. Life in the castle seemed to be settling into a routine. Clark would spend the day exploring or reading, then dine with Dick. After, they would go to the living room and Bat would be there. Bat would read to Dick, always curled under his wing, until Dick fell asleep. Clark would carry him to bed, then go to the library where he and Bat would talk. Clark smiled softly. He could have left days ago. His leg had healed completely. But there was something... something making him stay here. He frowned slightly. Bat's wings fluttered slightly, what Clark had come to learn as a silent question, like human raising their eyebrow.
"Nothing. It's fine. I was just... thinking." Bat nodded slightly, and went back to staring at the stars. Clark studied him. Maybe it was just that he was used to seeing him, but Bat wasn't so fearsome now. Instead, he could see who he was underneath. A kind, generous man, who had a heart of gold, but only let those closest to him see it. Clark felt extremely privileged to be one of those few. Bat looked so different, but he was so human too. Clark smiled softly. He didn't feel any need to move on from here. Maybe this was where he was supposed to be. Maybe his destiny was to keep Bat and Dick and Alfred company. Clark's smiled widened. Yes. He would like that.

"Please Clark! Please!!" Dick begged. Clark looked a little lost. Things had been very different from usual today. He had woken up to find Bat standing next to his bed. Apparently, it was Dick's birthday. And he wanted Clark to wear 'proper' clothes. By 'proper', he meant the most beautiful clothes Clark had ever seen, let alone worn. Clark had tried to protest, but Bat silenced him with a look and he had instantly felt ashamed. Here Dick was, alone in a enormous castle, save for Bat and Alfred, it was his birthday, and Clark would be denying him such a simple request.
So, he had dressed in the clothes, feeling extremely awkward and out of place, and hesitantly walked out from behind the screen to look into the mirror. He had shuffled from foot to foot, eyeing himself dubiously. The clothes were dark blue velvet with golden threadwork covering them in elaborate patterns. He had started when Bat appeared behind him in the mirror.
"You look like a prince," he had said, and Clark wondered at the sorrow in his voice. But, Bat moved away, and they had gone to find Dick and Alfred, and celebrated his birthday. Dick, surprisingly, had been quieter than normal, as had Alfred. Bat had been silent throughout most of the day. But now, it was evening, all the stars were shining brightly, and Dick was pleading with him.
"Dick... I don't know if-"
Dick cut him off. "Please Clark? Just one dance with Bat?"
Clark gazed at Bat, illuminated in starlight. Bat turned his head away from gazing at the night sky, and looked at him.
Clark found himself nodding slowly. "All right."
Dick grinned, and hugged him tightly. "Thank you Clark!"
Bat was still looking at him. He nodded ever so slightly. Swallowing, Clark moved closer to him, until he was standing before him. Bat's eyes were closed. Clark placed awkward hands on his back, careful of his wings. He realized it was the first time he had touched him. Bat stepped closer to him, trembling slightly, wings quivering as they gently wrapped around Clark, holding him in a strange embrace. They stood like that for a few moments before they began to move very slowly, clumsily, together. Bat was still trembling, but that was all right because Clark was too.
"Clark..." Bat whispered roughly. Clark would have said that his voice was thick with tears if he had been anyone else. "Thank you. For all that you've done. For the happiness and light you've brought here."
Bat was staring fixedly at his shoulder, as if he could not bring himself to look him in the face. Clark fumbled for words. "It's... been my pleasure, Bat. It's been so wonderful to meet you and Dick and Alfred..." he trailed off as Bat shuddered suddenly. A light came from the castle, red tinged light, like the light from the rose he had discovered. Clark frowned and tightened his hold on Bat slightly. He heard Dick sob, suddenly, and turned his head to see Alfred place a hand on his shoulder. Bat shuddered again and Clark quickly returned his attention to him. The light was almost blindingly brilliant now.
"Clark," he heard Bat whisper from what seemed like very far away.
Then, Bat fell forward in his arms, unconscious.
