He should have expected it really. Clark had been behaving very strangely recently. There had been times when Bruce walked into a room, and conversation would suddenly stop. Not something he was unused to, but the way Clark acted afterwards made it obvious that he had interrupted something he shouldn't know about.

When Bruce tried to corner Dick, who was 'in' with whatever Clark was up to, he was meet with transparently fake innocence. Not even his best Bat-glare would make him talk. The same happened with Tim. He didn't even bother to try with Alfred.

Things had got even worse a few days ago. He had gone to Metropolis unexpectedly. Something had come up with a WayneTech research project, and he had to go and sort out the problem personally. Clark, in the middle of a patrol, had flown past the windows of the building where the meeting to solve the problem was being held, glanced inside and... promptly forgot how to fly when he saw Bruce there.

Later, he claimed it was just the unexpected surprise, but he had a panicky look around his eyes. Unfortunately for him, Bruce knew him too well. He knew that the 'man who never lied' was, indeed, lying. Since Dick, Tim and Alfred weren't talking, he tried Oracle. Only to be met with the same feigned innocence that everyone seemed to be displaying around him lately.

Later, back in the cave, he tried doing some digging himself, only to be blocked remotely at every turn by the 'all seeing, all knowing Oracle'. After two hours, Bruce gave up in defeat, knowing that he couldn't best Oracle in her favoured environment.

Whenever 'The Silence', as he had come to call it, happened again when he walked in a room, he just ignored everyone.

Except Clark, when he was kissing him.

And Alfred, when he had cookies.

Then, this morning, Barbara dropped by unexpectedly. Then Dick did. They claimed they just wanted to 'spend time together as a family'. Bruce knew they were all totally insane. And that was before they started sharing knowing looks and bursting into laughter after he left the room. Bruce was in the middle of planning to send the whole lot of them to Arkham, 'indispensable allies' be damned, when Clark came home.

Bruce knew he was in even more trouble when Clark was acting even more clumsier than usual. Even after all this, Bruce was still utterly shocked when, after dinner, Clark went down on one knee, held a ring out in a trembling hand, and said, "Will you marry me?"
