The icing on the cake was uneven, lopsided, and some had slipped over the edge. The colour was too bright, slightly streaky. All in all it was one of the most unimpressive cakes Bruce had ever seen.
But Clark was beaming, even though he was covered in flour and icing. His bright blue eyes were shining. “Happy Birthday, Bruce!”
Bruce blinked and looked down at the cake again. The cake Clark had made just for him.
“I know it’s not as good as one of my Ma’s, or Alfred’s, but...” The happiness was gone from Clark now, instead he looked worried, embarrassed.
Bruce watched him for a moment more, then kissed him, tasting frosting on his lips. This was, he thought, as the kiss deepened, one of his best birthdays yet.
