Pieter looked up from the microscope wearily. He tried to remember the last time he had slept, but failed. He couldn't sleep. There was no time for him to sleep.
Michael was dying, infected with a deadly virus. There was no cure, so Pieter was trying to desperately find one.
He kept remembering his mother, remembering her final days, how she had died from a virus, blaming him for not being able to save her...
Pieter shook his head, banishing those memories away. He could find a cure. He would be able to save Michael.
Murmuring a prayer, pushing aside his worry, doubt and fear, he got back to work.

Pieter's lip throbbed. He could feel his pulse in the damaged skin, taste blood in his mouth. His head spun, and he pushed himself up from the floor, wondering what had hit him. He felt loose masonry under his hands. Ah. Some part of it must have fallen on him from above.
He was in darkness. True darkness: his goggles were on, but still, he couldn't see anything because there was nothing to see. Only rough stones and broken bodies. The results of an earthquake.
Pieter remembered now, he had been searching for survivors when an aftershock had trembled through the ground and the building had come down on him.
There was no one else alive. He had been lucky. He sighed, saying a prayer for those he had been too late to save.
Sudden noise. "Pieter!"
Pieter smiled to himself in the dark. Michael's voice.
Stabs of light, blinding him. Careful hands on his body. Soft words by his ear. Pieter smiled.

Date: 2010-05-02 08:41 pm (UTC)That was so heartbreaking story. Poor Pieter. First his mother died, even blaming him... and then Michael was dying too. But I love he didn’t give up, trying to find a cure.
There was no one else alive. He had been lucky. He sighed, saying a prayer for those he had been too late to save.
That sounded so desperate and hopeless.
Sudden noise. "Pieter!"
I was so glad for this line!
Beautifully written, Star! Although the stories were so sad, there always was a hope, a faith. I loved that!
Thank you very much for sharing this.

Sudden noise. "Pieter!"
I was so glad for this line!
*grins* I couldn't leave Pieter alone in there!
Thank you for commenting! I'm so glad you liked this two little stories. :)
