Drabble: Better Days

Author's Note: The fifth fic in the Shuffle B verse. For worlds_finest's Shuffle B Challenge. Prompt of 'Better Days'. Unbetaed, so point and I shall correct. :)



Clark stared down at the body lying on the bed in the medical bay of the Batcave.

It was Bruce.

Bruce, breathing, his heart beating, mended and whole and... here.

Clark tried to reach out and touch the warm skin, but he couldn't. He was terrified that if he did, he'd wake up and find this was just a dream, that none of this was real, as had happened so often already.

No matter how loudly he could hear Bruce's heart beat, could see his chest rising and falling, hear the soft sound of his breathing, smell Bruce's unique scent, free from death and decay and blood...

All he needed to do was touch. But he couldn't. He was held frozen in place by his fear.

Wolf blue eyes flickered open, and Clark choked on a sob, feeling his world truly come back into color, now he had seen the shade of blue again.

Bruce looked at him, and he was smiling, the same smile, the one he had given just before...

Clark reached out and touched his face. Bruce lent into his hand, his skin and hair soft and warm.

Clark choked on another sob, and couldn't stop the words from tumbling from his lips, wouldn't have wanted to have stopped them. "Bruce. Bruce, I love you."

Bruce looked up at him, and smiled that smile again, telling him everything without words.

Clark lent down and kissed him, feeling Bruce come to life under him, tasting him again and again.

That last line, it's so lovely! The double meanings of "come to life" there are just beautiful, and imagining Bruce waking up to find Clark there with his love in his eyes... *happy sigh*
