I did not like him. He was too bright. It hurt me to look upon him, he was so brilliant. He did not like him at first, either. He did not trust him. Nor did the bright one trust my knight. I was scornful towards him. He acted like everything he said was right, just because he said so. He acted like he was far above every one else. Like he was better than them.
I wondered, later, if my immediate dislike of him was because I knew, on some level, what was going to happen. That I would almost lose him because of him. But at that point, the only thing I knew was that I did not trust him and that he hurt me.
It was his brightness, you understand. To me, he was constantly glowing. And that hurt me. I needed darkness and shadows, not bright sunlight in the middle of the night. I tried to tell him that, but... I don't think he really understood. It was one of only a handful of times it happened.
Yes, my knight didn't trust him, but I could sense that he wanted to. It was buried deep down, hidden under suspicion and wariness, but it was there. I did not understand. Why would he want to trust him? I did not know how I knew this, but this man... he was not of this earth. He did not belong here. He was not like the others. So, I did not understand why he, even one day in the future, would trust him.
It simply never occurred to me that he was lonely. That the bright one was the only one, apart from me, of course, to understand him. I did not understand any of it. All I knew was that he was a threat, and that I wanted him gone as soon possible.
So I was horrified when the bright one said he would come back one day. He made a nasty comment to him, about how I was his, and I smiled. So did the bright one. He just repeated that he would be back soon, and flew off. I gazed at him through narrowed eyes until he faded away. He was looking after him as well. Thankfully, he soon turned his attention back to me.
I spent the rest of the night trying to reassure myself. I did not understand what was going on. All I knew was that I did not like the bright one at all. And I was worried. Because I knew that he, though he would vehemently deny it, did.
*****
The bright one started visiting more often. Though he still acted like he resented his presence, I could tell that he was softening towards him. And the bright one knew it too. I did not know what to do to make things right again. To make them go back to the way they were before he showed up.
I could not believe that he was continuing to allow the bright one's presence. That he even told him who he really was. Granted, the bright one had told him first, but I still could not understand why he had done so. When I went to the caverns under his house one night, I was shocked to discover that they were talking even when the bright one was not here.
I did not understand. He was beginning to forget me. Oh, not the actual city - he still went on patrol every night - but he was starting to forget me. And I was terrified. I did not know what I would do without him. I had almost lost him once when he left me, I could not lose him again. I could not. Especially not because of the bright one.
I started to make a plan to make the bright one go away. I also kept closer to him. I was very worried about him. He seemed so... different. Almost... happy. And then, it happened. The bright one came to his cave. They talked for a while as they always did, but this time something different happened.
The bright one kissed my prince. My knight.
I was frozen with shock. And then, he kissed him back. I was scared. And angry. How dare the bright one try and take him away from me! How dare he! He was mine, and he always would be! He would never be his! I would make sure of that. I would make sure that he would never leave me, and make the bright one go away forever.
My plan was now more dangerous than it had been before, but you must understand, I did not know what else to do. I just knew that I had to keep him here, and make sure he never forgot me again, no matter what the cost.

Lovely job, I loved the way you specify between 'him' and HIM.

I love this line--I think I pointed it out in beta!--because it's really such a huge concession on Gotham's part, to admit for even a moment that someone else could understand Bruce. That line alone gives me hope it what is a worrisome chapter! I love Gotham's intensity and fear so much, you write her so vividly...

*pets Gotham carefully* I don't think I had really realized that! But I think if she was going to do that for anyone, it would be Clark. :)
*glomps* Thank you for commenting, Jen! I'm really glad you liked it! :D

Awww, man, how sad is it that despite knowing him so well and having spent all her life with him, Gotham doesn't understand how lonely Bruce is? ;.; mrowww...
Looking forward to seeing more of this 'verse! I hope Gotham understands how important Clark is before she does something evil...

*pets Gotham* I think she thinks that he has her, so what need does he have for anyone else? :(
There should be more up soon, I think! And then I need to type up the next chapter... :)

Date: 2008-06-10 03:38 pm (UTC)It's funny, despite Gothams age, to me she is almost child like in her perseptions of the world. This is worrying as there is nothing more angry and unreasonalble than an child who has had somthing they consider there's taken away.
Carry on :)

*pictures to slightly balding fat men speaking into microphones*
"Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to today's Grudge match! A battle of which the likes has never been seen! In the Dark corner we have the Lady Gotham, Archaic beauty of the night! In the Light corner we have the Majestic Metropolis, Shining glory of New Troy! Which of these fearsome filly's will take the title?"
"Well Bill, I'm not going to discount either. Metropolis, she may have the weight advantage but Gotham, she's a mean one. Her previous form is stunning to. Both Star and Central have fallen to her in one round. We just gonna have to wait and see."
"Thanks Bob. Yes folks we're just gonna have to wait till this clash of the titans starts, that will be in 5 minutes right after a quick word from our sponsors.
*fade to beer advert*
bah! *goes and hides in the corner*
