12_stories's, prompt of Rain. Betaed by the wonderful
arch_schatten.
Pieter closed his eyes, feeling the rain brushing his upturned face, the droplets falling like tears from his eyes, running down his unmasked face. He smiled. There was something so beautiful about rain; soothing away pain and fear. It could bring relief from droughts, but become an unstoppable force when there was too much. A reminder of how Mother Nature could both give and take away. But, in the right amounts, it was fine. Oh, people would grumble, complain about getting wet, and he would just walk through them, a smile on his face, letting the rain caress him.
He heard footsteps quietly approaching, the hum of T-Sphere's absent for now. Pieter sighed, his smile fading. The rain abruptly stopped, though he could still hear it falling. Michael had an umbrella and had put it up, covering them both. Pieter opened his eyes, but didn't put his goggles or glasses on, remaining instead in darkness.
"You shouldn't do this. Come out here in the rain without an umbrella." There were so many layers to Michael's voice: concern and confusion, love and pain.
"I like it," was all he responded, hearing the 'and you know that', in the words, though he had tried to hide them.
Michael sighed beside him, audible over the rain. "You should come inside. We don't need you getting a cold."
Pieter smiled, slightly wryly. "I'm fine, Michael."
Michael sighed again, and he could imagine him looking at the rain around them, hearing the car horns. Michael pressed the umbrella into his hand.
"Have this at least." He didn't give him any chance to respond before he was gone. Pieter sighed, and lowered the umbrella, closing it. He sat alone in the rain again.
There was a sudden smell of roses and the sound of childish laughter, and Pieter smiled wryly again, feeling their presence. Paula. Paula and Terry. Paula and Terry, Michael's wife and unborn son, who had been killed in a car accident in the rain.
Just like he had killed.
Pieter sighed again, ceding defeat. Michael would never get over Paula and Terry's death. He was tired of competing with ghosts. He could never win against them, anyway.
Pieter got up, and left the umbrella behind.

Date: 2008-01-25 11:41 pm (UTC)*hugs Star* This was so sad and beautiful, and somehow the scent of roses in the rain was wonderfully haunting, as was the symbol of the umbrella and the rain.
Wonderfully sad. *sighs*
