Author's Note: For [livejournal.com profile] neotoma, who asked for 'Sand/Karen, 'As a man longs to see his house when he has spent years in captivity'. Unbetaed, so point and I shall correct. Oh, and it's from Sandy's POV.

He had had a strange life. Hardly anything about it could be considered ordinary, in fact. Being the sidekick, the mascot, to the very first JSA. And then, all those years trapped... He didn't like to think about that time.

Then, once he had been freed, the JSA had reformed once again and Wesley had died and he'd been trying to control his new powers, to come to terms with the new world and how much everything had changed... It wasn't surprising that he had fallen hard for the other visibly tortured soul in the team. Kendra... she was with the JLA now, happy. He had to be happy for her.

Then he had lost the chairmanship of the JSA, though he would be the first to tell you that Michael had excelled at leading them. And so many other changes and deaths and betrayals. When he thought over how few years had passed and remembered again just how long he had spent, frozen and trapped... It truly amazed him, sometimes.

Then his powers had changed again, as crisis after crisis raged over the Earth, leaving him unable to sleep, with the most horrific nightmares...

He yearns, sometimes, to be back in that frozen state, when he's seeing unspeakable things happening to children and all he can hope is that somehow, in some way, he'll be able to help them, to save them from the torment, until it is time for they, too, to dream.

He sighs, and wishes for a simpler world. The younger, more innocent world, that he remembers.

Perhaps it isn't surprising that they are drawn together, slowly at first, then ever increasingly. For Karen too, is full of torment, though like him, she doesn't show it. But being awake, at the dead hours of the night, when they are both trying to find escape from their dreams... For she too, is displaced, doesn't truly belong to this time.

They find solace, together. Peace.

Somehow, amongst the shattered remnants of their lives, they manage to find a place that becomes home. But they never speak of it. It will forever remain unspoken, for fear of breaking it, of shattering the fragile home they have built. But that doesn't mean they both don't know. They do, the knowledge is shared in a glance and brief touch.

Maybe it won't last; one of them will break it. But for now, it's enough for them both.
