The first time Nightwing sees him, he is fighting some thugs in a dark alley of Bludhaven. Nightwing somersaults through the air, watching the man effortlessly fighting the men. He spares a moment to admire his grace, his long blonde hair whipping about him, his movements too fast for even him to follow, but then he's fighting too. Together, they make quick work of the thugs. Nightwing looks up from the pile of bodies on the street to find sharp, bright, incredibly blue eyes looking at him, eyes that are old. Very old. He gasps involuntary at what he sees in them. But before he can utter a word, make any movement, the man is gone with no trace of his ever being there. When Dick thinks back on it later, half asleep in his apartment after a long, tiring, night, he would almost have said that the man had been glowing.

The next time they meet, the blonde man saves his life. Nightwing had busted what he thought was a normal drugs ring. He had been wrong. It was an ambush. He had fought as best as he could, but there was only so much he could do with so many adversaries. But then the blonde man appeared from no where, fighting with that incredibly graceful style that he had never seen anyone use before, all wiring motions and gleaming blonde hair. Amid the confusion and men's screams, Nightwing notes that the other man is definitely glowing this time; he can see him clearly through the mass of bodies between them. Together, they make short work of the thugs.
This time, the man stays. He looks at him guardedly, and Nightwing has the impression of a big cat, ready to flee at a seconds notice. He doesn't want him to go. He doesn't know why, but there's something about him, something that has haunted his dreams ever since he saw him...
"Who are you?" He can barely whisper the question.
The man smiles slightly, mysteriously. "A friend," is all he says, and Nightwing wants to weep at the sound of his voice, so beautiful, so musical, like an angel's must sound. The man's smile grows a little, like he's amused at him, and then he's gone, only a brief flash of blonde hair marking his movements. Nightwing finds his legs suddenly giving out beneath him, and it's not because of the wounds he received in the fight. He thought... he thought he caught a glimpse of pointed ears.

The man comes to him, the next time they meet. Nightwing is standing on a rooftop, having a short break during his patrol, looking out at the lights of Bludhaven. He doesn't notice him approach, and he jumps a foot in the air when he hears his voice.
"Why are you here?"
Nightwing spins around, gasping at the sight of him in the moonlight. He's defiantly glowing now, and the beauty of it and him take his breath away. "I..." he starts, then has to swallow before starting again. "I... have to. No one else is here." His answer doesn't seem like enough, it's hardly a reason to him, but the blonde smiles at him, a small, delighted smile this time.
"A good reason."
Nightwing blinks, but he can hardly seem to think. "Why are you..?"
The blonde smiles again. "Someone has to be."
"But... but..."
The man moves, no glides towards him. "You are not alone, my friend."
Nightwing swallows, knowing somehow, that this man has only trusted very few like this. "Why... why did you come to me?"
Another one of those mysterious smiles. "You remind me of someone. Someone I knew a very long time ago."
Perhaps he shouldn't ask, but... "Who?"
"A very great man. His name was Estel."
Nightwing blinks, but the man's gone again, and he's once more alone on the rooftop.

When they next meet, he stumbles across the man. They both look as surprised as each other, but the blonde looks annoyed almost instantly. "I should have heard your approach."
It's Nightwing's turn to smile slightly. "Well, I've been taught by the best."
One of the other man's eyebrows quirk at that, but he doesn't comment. Nightwing slowly sits down next to him on the fire escape. "Who are you?" He asks again.
The man turns to look at him, and Nightwing suddenly realizes how close they are to one another. He can see his ears clearly.
"I am an elf." He's looking at him warily, like he's not sure how he'll respond.
"I... guessed that part. But, who are you?"
The elf smiles brightly at him, like a child presented with an unexpected present. "My name is Legolas."
"Legolas." The name is musical and - Nightwing snorts to himself - elvin. It sounds far better when it's bearer says it, with the lyricalness in his accent.
"I'm... well, when I'm dressed like this, I'm called Nightwing." He offers, almost shyly.
"I know. I have heard about you." Legolas' eyes sparkle.
Nightwing blushes slightly, then impulsively removes his mask. "But when I'm like this, I'm Richard. Or Dick for short."
One of those stunning smiles again. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Richard."
"Likewise."
He can't seem to take his eyes off the elf, he knows he staring, but he can't help himself. That the elf is looking at him intently doesn't help. Dick's almost surprised when their lips suddenly meet, but not so much that he can't enjoy it. They kiss slowly, gently, just brushing of the lips - no more - but it's the most intense kiss he's ever had. They are both gasping when they break apart at last. Legolas looks away from him, up at the stars, his face shuttered.
"What? What's wrong?" Dick desperately asks, terrified that Legolas will leave again, but this time for good.
There is silence for long moments. "I am..." Legolas halts. "My heart is going to be scarred again." He turns to look at him, and his eyes are filled with pain and world-weariness. But then they brighten. "It will be worth it."
They kiss again, Legolas' glow spreading to cover him.
