starsandsea: (Batman and Superman - Cute!)

Another Request!

I'm starting to make a habit of this, LOL. This time I want recs, please! Recs of good comics, of trades, preferably, mainly of Batman and Superman and Justice League titles (I've got nearly all the JSA ones), though I'm willing to try Robin and Nightwing and Batgirl if there are any good ones, which is perhaps showing my ignorance, and thus my need for recs! :p

I want good comics, and try to stay as far away from anything Miller or Miller related as I can, and I also will not read anything that has children and/or major characters dying, since it's my philosophy that if I don't read the comic where they die, they aren't dead to me!

So... has any of that made sense? I'm not sure... But, basically, are there any good comics that you think I will like? Please let me know! :)

Woot! Comics!

Well... to be honest I wish I had more good Batman trades.. But I'll offer you what I've read and really liked!

Superman For All Seasons is one of my favorite Superman comics. I love Tim Sale's art and I hoard his books! ..in that vein, Batman: The Long Halloween, Dark Victory and the other one by Loeb and Sale I can't remember the name... those Batman books are pretty interesting with lots of rogues and mob intrigue and Selina and stuff! Check out the art first, because it's not everyone's cup of tea...

Darwin Cooke has a collection of all his Batman stories that I really want to get, and I would recommend that one! Batman: Ego is in that trade and it's one of my favorite Batman stories ever. So woobie!

I also really liked Batman: Broken City, though that one has a more cynic version of Batman. Azzarello is supposedly influenced by Miller, but his Batman is always Bruce Wayne at the core, I think that makes all the difference. That book is kind of crazy with lots of mob insanity and Scarface and Croc playing big parts...

Batman: Black & White... mixed bag of goodies, most of the time awesome.

As for Superman, I haven't read the All Star Superman *yet* but I have heard nothing but great things about it. ...I don't own many Superman comics! My brother took all of his with him ;.;

As for JLA, the whole Morrison/Waid run is brilliant, I love the JLI trades too... I have a JLA Classified: New Maps of Hell, that I really really liked.

Batgirl: Year One is really cool, and I have heard nothing but great things for the Cass Batgirl book. I am looking to buy those too... the Batfamily runs around in that book quite a lot, too!

Not what you're asking for rec-wise, but right now my unmissables are the All New Atom trades and the Green Lantern Corps. SO MUCH FUN!!

Whee! :D

*glomps* Thank you so much, Mina! :D

I've got some of these, and I've thought about getting others, but I wasn't quite sure about them!

I've seen scans of that! That one is fine for me. As long as Batman isn't running around saying that he's the goddamn Batman and abducting children and eating rats then it's generally okay(ish), lol.

I have a JLA Classified: New Maps of Hell, that I really really liked.

Ooooh, I really want to get that one! I've downloaded it, but there's a difference between reading it the computer screen and actually having the comic, you know? Unfortunately it seems like it will be really difficult to get, over here at least. But I will continue on my quest to find it! :p

Batgirl: Year One is really cool, and I have heard nothing but great things for the Cass Batgirl book. I am looking to buy those too... the Batfamily runs around in that book quite a lot, too!

Awesome, I will look out for those then! :D

LOL, I'll look for those too! I'm such a snob, really, unless it has Batman or Superman or the JSA in I'll just ignore it. But I'm working on that! I've (sort of) started reading Manhunter, so yay! :D

*glomps again* Thank you again, Mina! :D You're the best.

Woo, yay! it's not all Miller-crazy, thankfully. Bruce has a couple of super woobie moments, too. Did you see the scans of it in scans_daily? I follow [livejournal.com profile] lucean's posts religiously and buy the books I like that s/he highlights :P

I bought the first Manhunter trade but I haven't been able to get myself to read it yet. It seems.. very serious! but I've heard it widely recommended -Wake likes it, and you like it too, and my brother just told me it was good as well!

GL Corps is a lot of crazy fun in space, though a bit violent. But Guy is really awesome in it, I'm enjoying it a lot! and The All New Atom is probably my favorite book! it's a lot of fun! I have trouble reading books about non-Batman characters too, I admit :P but the fandom kept tempting me with those books.. I'm also thinking of getting The Brave and the Bold. I like team ups more than single books!

Do you have any recs for me? *pokes* Rec rec rec!

Yep, I saw it there, but I have vague memories of downloading and reading it, lol. I follow their posts too! I want to buy those books, but... no one wants to sell them here! Not even Amazon, woe!! But I'm going to the comic book shop tomorrow, so I'll have to see what I can find! :D

Yeah, from what I gather after the first trade it gets better, but I do have to say I mainly read it for Obsidian, lol. He's so cute! :P

Oooh, you should read Brave and the Bold! I can really rec The Lords of Luck - that one's so much fun. Hee, Batman v The Legion of Superheroes! :D

Hmmm, what else... well, I don't think I have to rec JSA to you, lol. But my favorites from those would have to be Prince's of Darkness, Lost, and Black Vengeance - that one's got a really fun story where the legacy members of the JSA - Stargirl, Michael, Pieter, ect - have to travel back to the 1950's, and stop the JSA from disbanding.

What else... Batman: Turning Points is good! That's got really good Batman and Gorden stuff. And the Dini trades, Detective and Death and the City. *ponders* And Tales of the Batman! That's got a awesome story of the Arkham inmates playing baseball, I think, against the Blackgate inmates. :p

As for non trades... well, Gotham Knights, at least the first part of it's run I really like - BatClan, whoo! :D

For Superman... well, All Star Superman is awesome. And Birthright is fun too, even if I don't agree with some of it, lol. *does not have many Superman trades*

And, um, yeah. That's it, I think. :p

[identity profile] arch-schatten.livejournal.com 2008-06-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Is the Lords of Luck a storyline from The Brave and the Bold? *notes it down* And I had forgotten entirely that Obsidian shows up in Manhunter! yay! another reason to keep buying the trades, then X)

I don't have any of those JSA trades! I will look for them too :) Of the JSA trades I particularly liked Ghost Stories and Honor Among Thieves. I really like Icicle/Tigress! awww, they are adorable!! X)

I will look for those Batman trades too! The Arkham story sounds so cool!! X) I love the rogue centric stories!

I liked Birthright too, though I wished that Batman was around so hard! it would have made things easier for Superman to have a friend in the business!

[identity profile] starsandsea.livejournal.com 2008-06-15 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, the Lords of Luck is the first 6 issues from the current run of Brave and the Bold. I want to get Manhunter trades, but my comic book shop only has the second one, and I want to get them in order. :( I'll have to see if Amazon sell them... Oh! And I got New Maps of Hell! My comic book shop had it, and I was so happy. :D

Ghost Stories is really fun! And I really liked Honor Among Thieves too - they were both some of the first JSA comics I got. :)

Oh, I really wished that Bruce was there in Birthright! *huggles Clark* He really needed to have a friend who was a hero in that one. *pets him*

[identity profile] jij.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
I do second Batman: Black and White! I just got one of the trades today! *flails* They're not all good, but what I like them for is they're nibble-sized and you can stop after each one and say "Did I like that story? Did I like the art?" and start noticing what things you like and don't like. Very nice for developing your sense of Batman. :)

Superman trades, uh. A lot of them are terrible! Mina mentioned all my favorites (and if you don't read All-STar Superman soon, I shall die!)

Godfall makes no sense, but is very pretty.

Have you read Kingdom Come yet? I think you'd like it...

You have read all of the Loeb run of Superman/Batman, right?

"Camelot Falls" and "Up Up and Away" are two recent Superman runs that were pretty good, from what I saw.

That's about all I've got so far! :)

[identity profile] starsandsea.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
*flails* I love the Black and Whites! I've got them all and some of my favorite Batman stories are in them. :D

I have All Star Superman! I'm kinda waiting for the second trade to come out, but I have an idea of what's going on with the current issues! :)

Have you read Kingdom Come yet? I think you'd like it...

Yep, I've got that one! *pets Clark and Bruce carefully* Hee, I love that Bruce so much. And Ollie! :P

And I've read all the Loeb run of Superman/Batman. Surely that's a requirement for a Batman/Superman slasher... :p

I'll add Camelot Falls and Up Up and Away to my list then! I keep seeing one called Superman: For Tomorrow, and I have no idea what it's about, lol. Do you know what it's about? I really need to read more Superman stuff...

*glomps* Thanks for the recs, Jen! :D

[identity profile] jij.livejournal.com 2008-06-13 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've read and if I remember right, I'm not sure you'd like "For Tomorrow." The few scans I've seen I didn't like much, although it's Jim Lee art and so pretty! But Kal gets really disassociated from humanity and cold and cruel to everyone. There's a scene where he's talking with Batman on a rooftop and Batman insists that he call him Bruce (which seems really off to me, Batman inisiting Kal call him Bruce out in public??) and Kal says "Bruce is just a mask. All you are is Batman" and flies off. Which is...really cruel! T_T Maybe he makes up for it later? I've never been able to bear to look and find out...

I figured you must have read the Loeb, but better safe than sorry on checking! :)

Oh, have you read Emperor Joker? It's...well, there's no plot I can find, but among the weirdness it has massive amounts of Bruce woobie. Like, lethal levels, lol...

[identity profile] starsandsea.livejournal.com 2008-06-14 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, I've seen scans of that moment! That is a... very weird moment!

Yep, I've got Emperor Joker! Bruuuuuce!!! *huggles him very very carefully* *pets Clark* Poor darlings!

Thank you for all the advice, Jen! :D

[identity profile] saavikam77.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you been reading Superman/Batman at all? Everything up to the last 12 or so issues has been collected into books, so they're easy to get. The Superman/Batman Annual #1 is a wonderfully cracktastic story that makes the slash all but canon. :)

Happy reading!

[identity profile] starsandsea.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, I've got some of those! The ones written by Loeb... surely Bruce and Clark are only moments away from declaring their love? :p

Hee, the first annual is awesome. Brokeback Titanic! *giggles*

Thank you for the recs! :D

I second Mina's recs of Batman: Ego and Batgirl: Year One. Ego is a really interesting look into Bruce's psyche and Batgirl: Year One is a lot of fun (plus the art is *gorgeous*).

I would also recommend The Gauntlet (cool story about Dick's final test before he can become Robin.) and Family (8 part story involving a criminal mastermind named Athena who has a group of her own to challenge the Bat Family. This story also sheds some light on Bruce's mother and his relationship with her, which is nice because most stories tend to focus on his father).

I think I have all of these in digital format so just let know if you'd like me to upload them for you. :)

I'm definitely putting those two on my list! :D

I've never heard of that first one, I don't think! I think I've seen some scans, once, of Family. Is the woman sort of in charge of Wayne Enterprises for a bit? *tries to remember*

If you could upload them, that would be awesome! :D *glomps* Thank you!

[identity profile] cavaleira.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for comics! Yeah, Family is the one with that woman in charge of WE for a awhile. Here's the link to it:

Here's the Gauntlet:

Unfortunately, I only have Batgirl: Year One in hard copy, but you should definitely check it out when you get a chance.

Enjoy!

*squees very loudly*

Eeeee, that's awesome! Thank you so much! :D *glomps*
