Drabble: Catch Me

His grapple line had been cut.

Batman twisted in the air, fighting against the wind, against gravity, to get a new line out, before he hit terminal velocity...

Another great gust of wind, then arms strong enough to hold the planet together were about him, arresting his fall; a red cape fluttered before his eyes. Bright blue eyes looked into his own, wide with concern, and Batman felt his lips twitch.

“Knew you’d catch me,” he murmured, and Superman’s smile in return was brilliant.

Superman was falling, tumbling through the air, a shard of green kryptonite embedded in his chest.

Batman swore, leaped into the air himself. He had to get this just right, if he miscalculated... He felt his face turn even grimmer. Just... there!

He grunted at the force of extra weight, but managed to curve them into a controlled fall; they landed at the side of some ruined remains of a building.

Blue eyes, tinged with green, met his own and Superman smiled weakly.

“Knew you’d catch me,” he murmured, and Batman nodded, then bent to remove the deadly shard of kryptonite.

Oh, perfect. *happy sigh* I love the parallels and the sense of equality and respect, and the differences in Superman's eyes and smile (and the matching lack of difference in Batman's even when the situations are so different!) Thank you so much for this!

I admit, I've gone away from Bruce and Clark too - so many new fandoms and pairings! - but it's so nice to come back and write stories like this, where they always have each others backs; rescue each other... :)
