Ficlet: Lost Friends

Title: Lost Friends
Rating: PG
Characters: Bruce, Ra's al Ghul, Clark
Word Count: 429
Disclaimer: I own nothing
Warnings: Movieverse
Author's Note: For Anon, who asked for Henri and Bruce, with Superman a friend. This... didn't really turn out that way! I'm sorry... My Bruce!Muse was in a bit of a mood when I wrote this. I hope you like it anyway. Unbetaed, so point and I shall correct. And tenses are EVIL!

Batman looked at the wreckage below him, of what had almost happened to Gotham. His chest ached, both with the injuries he had sustained during the fire - he flinched away from the memory of his Father's house, of everything of his Mother's and Father's that had been left burning, forever beyond him now - and from him fight with the members of the League of Shadows and... Ra's.

Not Henri.

Ra's al Ghul.

Leader of the League of Shadows. The man who was responsible for the fire. The man who had nearly driven Gotham to madness...

Batman's head ached. He wasn't sure if it was because of his feelings of grief and pain and betrayal, or because of his concussion.

Sirens wailed, and he knew he should be down there, helping, but he was frozen where he was, staring at the wreckage of his building. Of the near disaster averted. Of the life lost.

He didn't know how to think of Henri... Ra's... now. He had been his friend. He had understood him in a way on one else had. And he had helped forge Bruce into the man he was today. But he had betrayed Henri and been betrayed in return. Almost everything had been torn from him, as he had torn everything away from Ra's.

Batman sighed. There was work to be done, and he couldn't stand here, frozen forever. He waited for a gust of wind, then fell, feeling his cape snap out behind him.

*****

Almost a year later Bruce attended Harvey Dent's funeral. Rachel Dawes funeral was held the day before, smaller than Harvey's.

Bruce had hardly been able to bring himself to attend, the taste of failure in his mouth like ashes. Now James Gordon, in his first major public role as Commissioner, was talking about heroes and knights.

Bruce looked away. There are no knights left in Gotham.

His gaze fell on a man, a reporter, who looked about the most awkward person Bruce had ever seen. He shakes his head and looks away. All his life was loss and betrayal. His parents. Henri and Ra's. Rachel. Harvey.

He wonders when it will stop, but he knows it never will. Sacrifice and betrayal. The only two constants in his life. He has no room for friends, only traitors.

They're better off without him anyway.

Bruce stood up. There is work to be done.

He can feel the reporter's gaze on him. He leaves anyway. Better not to make friends.

No matter who they might be, under ill fitting suits and heavy glasses.

Poor Bruce! It was so sad. He sounded so lonely and desperately thinking about all the tragic things in his life, all the betrayal and about not having a friend.

He can feel the reporter's gaze on him. He leaves anyway. Better not to make friends.
No matter who they might be, under ill fitting suits and heavy glasses.

Oh no! *Hugs Bruce*
You know, the story was sad and the ending sounded almost hopeless. Still, I can see a hope for Bruce there. I’m sure Clark won’t give up. And Bruce will be happy again. :)

Thanks for this wonderfully written story. :)

I'm sure Clark won't give up either! He can be very determined when he wants to be... :)

Thank you for your lovely comment! I'm so glad you liked it! :D

*wibbles* This is wonderfully plausible after TDK.

I really like the way he wavers back and forth on what to call Ra's. I imagine that would be a real hard issue for him after the first movie...

I kinda had difficulties writing this! Post-TDK Bruce is hard to write... *pets him*

That was one of my favorite bits of this story! It must be so... confusing and frustrating and just... Argh! for him. *pets him again*
