Drabble: Snow

Michael looked outside the window at the snow that was falling. He should be thinking how beautiful it was, feeling the childish excitement rising up (Snow! Snow! It's snowing!) but all he could think about was how dangerous the roads would become, how many accidents there would be, how many people would die tonight because of the pure, innocent snow...

He looked away from the window in the kitchen, and down at his mug of steaming coffee. He looked up when he heard someone walking near the door. Pieter walked into the kitchen, Charlie flapping his wings on his shoulder. Michael watched him sit down at the table, Charlie moving to perch on his forearm. Pieter reached a gloveless hand out and ran it over his feathers, then looked up at him. Michael felt uneasy, as he always did when Pieter wasn't wearing his mask and he was. But Pieter was wearing his glasses, so perhaps he shouldn't feel too bad...

"It's snowing." Pieter's voice was tired - Michael frowned slightly, thinking of the long hours he was no doubt pulling at the clinic - but it was laced with excitement.

"Yes," was all he replied, taking a sip of his coffee.

Pieter was smiling. "I remember when we would have the first snowfall in Norway. The children would all have competitions to see who could build a snowman first." Pieter laughed now, shaking his head. "It's a wonder we didn't all freeze to death."

Michael smiled slightly, remembering his own childish playings in the snow, trying to put a smile on his brother's face. Pieter looked away from him, and went back to stroking Charlie.

"Do you miss it?" It was always jarring to remember that Pieter wasn't from America, though his accent was all but gone, only flavoring his words when he spoke of Norway, which wasn't often.

"Norway? Sometimes. I miss the people more."

Michael nodded. Maybe he could learn Norwegian? It wouldn't take very long...

"Are you all right, Michael?" Pieter - and Charlie - were both looking at him in concern.

"I'm fine, Pieter."

Pieter nodded, then smiled, almost mischievously. "Do you want to build a snowman on the roof?"

Michael blinked, then let the childish excitement bubble up from deep inside him in the form of laughter. "All right."

Pieter stood up, and walked over to him. "Good." They kissed slowly, Charlie flapping away, then perching on Pieter's shoulder again when they had broken apart.

Perhaps indulging their childish sides would be good for them both.
