Fic: The Best Dog In The Whole Universe
Title: The Best Dog In The Whole Universe
Rating: PG
Characters: Krypto, Clark, Bruce
Word Count: 1240
Disclaimer: I own nothing
Author's Note: For the WFGE! Prompt F19 - 'Comics Krypto has just been freed from the Phantom Zone. Clark gets to show his delighted dog to the joys of Earth: things like bacon, running on the beach, playing catch...and meeting Batman for the first time. Established relationship, pre-slash, or gen are all great!' I played with things a little though. :p
It smelt good. Krypto raised his head and wagged his tail. There had been no true smells for a long, long time. Only emptiness, save the smell of his boy. Krypto whined a little, and his boy scratched behind his ears, making Krypto wag his tail even faster.
“Here you go, Krypto. I bet you must be plenty hungry.”
His boy put a plate on the floor and Krypto sniffed it. That smell... He hadn’t smelt anything like that before. He looked up at his boy, whined again.
“It’s okay. It’s bacon. You’ll like it, I promise.”
Krypto closed his eyes; he loved the sound of his boy’s voice. He opened his eyes, sniffed at the plate again, carefully took a bite and... lunged for the rest of it, heard his boy’s laughter.
“You like that, huh?”
Krypto barked and wagged his tail so hard his whole body shook, the delicious taste still in his mouth, sniffed for more, then whined pitifully, looked up at his boy. His boy who was smiling, happy. He scratched behind his ears again and Krypto leaped up, licked his face.
And then his boy said those words, those best words. “Who’s the best dog in the whole universe?”
Krypto barked and his boy laughed again, and everything was perfect.
*****
His boy had taken him a strange place. Krypto sniffed cautiously; there was damp gritty stuff that stuck to his paws and fur and nose. By the side of it was moving water that smelt strange.
Krypto looked up at his boy and whined in question.
“You’ll love it here, Krypto. This is the beach.”
Krypto paused, looked around. There were hardly any other people, and no other dogs. Just him and his boy, wearing his Earth clothes.
His boy reached down, scritched behind his ears and Krypto wagged his tail.
“This must be so strange for you, Krypton didn’t have anywhere like this, did it?” Krypto barked and his boy smiled. “Well, Earth has a lot of good things, and this is one of them. C’mon, lets run a bit.”
Krypto barked again, and they were off running, not fast, but still fun. Krypto looked up at his boy, tongue hanging out, tasting the strange smell in the air. When they stopped Krypto skidded, rolled over. The damp gritty stuff felt strangely nice on his fur.
His boy laughed, scratched behind his ears again. “You want to try swimming?”
Krypto barked, wagged his tail as his boy led them into the strange smelling moving water. Carefully, Krypto placed a paw in it, jumped back when it moved away. But his boy kept walking so Krypto followed. The water was cold, but nice, removed some of the gritty stuff from his fur. It had been a long time since he had had a bath, so Krypto plunged in, barked up at his boy who was watching, laughing.
Later, covered in even more of the gritty stuff, Krypto lay beside his boy, who petted his ears, tail wagging wildly.
“Who’s the best dog in the whole universe?”
Krypto barked, wagged his tail even harder, and jumped up and licked his boy’s face.

He remembered this! The joy of something being thrown and he chasing it, then bringing it back to his boy for it to be thrown again. His boy laughed and Krypto wagged his tail hard, tongue hanging out.
“You remember this, huh boy?” His boy said, threw the stick again. Krypto bounded after it, barking.
“You would’ve loved the farm, Krypto,” his boy said quietly, and Krypto faltered. His boy was sad. He carefully picked up the stick, then brought it back to his boy, placed it at his feet, whining softly.
“Good boy, Krypto.” His boy’s voice was still quiet. He did not throw the stick again. Krypto stopped wagging his tail, leaped so he was hovering, nosed at his boy, whining gently.
“Sorry, boy. I just... I just miss them.”
Krypto whined softly again, licked at his boy’s face, tasted strange salty moisture. His boy put his arms about him.
“You’re a good boy, Krypto. Yeah, you’re the best dog in the whole universe.” His boy let him go, smiled again. “Lets play some more.”
His boy scratched him behind his ears, and Krypto wriggled, making his boy laugh, before he threw the stick again. Krypto gave his boy one last lick, then bounded after it, barking, tail wagging furiously.

The city was strange and dark, not like his boy’s new home. Somewhat anxious, Krypto pressed closer to his boy, whined.
“It’s alright, boy. We’re here to meet a friend.” His boy stroked his ears, but Krypto whined again, then spun and barked.
“You have a super dog now?” A voice asked, making his boy jump.
Krypto leaped forward, growling, ready to defend his boy, then... He sniffed carefully. He knew this man! His boy visited him all the time! Cautiously, Krypto crept closer, heard his boy chuckle while he sniffed.
This man smelt strange, but under it was a familiar smell, a smell he had not smelt in a long, long time. Another dog! Krypto barked, wagged his tail, looked up at his boy and this strange man.
“This is Krypto. Krypto, this is Batman. He was my dog on Krypton, but was trapped in the Phantom Zone after saving my life. I’ve only just managed to free him.” His boy said, and Krypto pressed close to him, gazed up at him in adoration, wagged his tail even harder.
“Hmm. So the dog has all your powers then?” The other man - Batman - asked.
“He seems to, though I haven’t tested them all yet. I’ve just been introducing him to what life is like for dogs on Earth, and thought he should meet you. And-”
“Kal.”
“Yes?”
Krypto looked between his boy and the other man, wagged his tail even harder and whined.
“... Fine. Just make sure it doesn’t break anything.”
“I will, B. Thanks! C’mon, boy!” His boy lifted into the air, higher and higher, and Krypto chased him, barking now and then, before his boy caught him and scratched behind his ears again. Then they went down and down and down again, until they reached a big house,
It smelt of the other man here! And the smell of dog! Krypto barked and wriggled and wagged his tail. He could hear other barking now, heard his boy laugh.
“Hey Bruce. You made it back before us, then.”
Krypto blinked. He had been so distracted by the other dog he had not noticed the man - Batman - now dressed and smelling differently. At his side was a dog who was barking up at him, and Krypto barked back, wriggling with excitement as he landed. He and the other dog sniffed each other.
“Krypto, this is Ace. Ace, Krypto.” His boy said, and Krypto barked: ‘My boy’.
The other dog, Ace, barked in return: ‘My man.’
‘Play?’ Krypto asked, crouching his front down, tail wagging furiously, hardly able to keep still.
‘Play.’ Ace agreed, and Krypto leaped into the air, paused a moment to lick his boy’s face.
“You’re the best dogs in the whole universe. Now go have fun.” His boy scritched his ears, and Krypto barked, then bounded after his friend, tongue hanging out, tail wagging, completely and utterly happy.
