Clark woke from the dream with a gasp. He had been dreaming of Bruce again. He curled into the warm blankets, loneliness overwhelming him. He never wanted to wake up from those dreams, he wanted - needed - them to be real, for Bruce to be alive again, for Bruce to look at him, smile at him, glare at him, laugh at him, watch him in suspicion...

He just wanted his best friend back. His best friend, who knew him so well, knew him better than he knew himself, knew what he needed, knew everything.

Clark bit back a whimper. He just wanted someone to talk to, freely, someone who he could be himself around. He wanted Bruce back.

He closed his eyes and tried to fall back to sleep - at least in his dreams he could see Bruce, alive and happy and whole again. Not as he had last seen him, covered with blood and struggling to breathe.

And then there had been his smile...

Clark banished the image away, and tried to remember his dream instead. Bruce's eyes had been alight with laughter.

He fell asleep again, seeing Bruce, smiling at him softly. Clark traced the lines of his face, wonder filling his body. "Bruce. Bruce." Bruce just smiled at him again, the one he hardly ever used, Clark's favorite. "Bruce."

He woke again, alone, to dawns light, knowing there was something else he had to add, before it was too late, before Bruce faded away completely. "Bruce. I love you."

He hadn't realized it until he spoke the words, and then he wondered how he had ever not known them. "I love you," he repeated in wonder, in grief that it had taken him this long to realize it. "I love you, Bruce," he said again, wishing he had known before, could have added it to their conversations at any time, he realized now.

"By the way, I love you." Six little words. That was all.

The image of Bruce's body flickered through his mind again, his smile. Clark hugged his pillow and felt his eyes become wet with tears as he finally understood what Bruce had been trying to tell him with it.

"I love you."
