The color had gone from his life. Everything was black now. He had never known there were so many different shades of black. He bet Bruce knew that, Bruce knew every-

Bruce was dead.

Clark felt his world stop, felt it crumble down, collapsing around him.

Bruce was dead.

Everything was black.

Somehow, he managed to pick himself back up, to build his world up again. His black world. No other colors. Never again. People said he still wore red and blue, and he looked at them, not comprehending. Didn't they see he wasn't? He was wearing black. All of it black, everything black. No color. Never again.

He kept thinking he was seeing Batman's cape, fluttering out the corner of his eye. But it was only ever flags, or washing, or curtains blowing in the breeze. The black world was hiding him from Bruce, hiding him. Bruce had always been so good at lurking, at blending into the shadows, into darkness. Into blackness.

He could barely remember a time when there were colors in his life. He thinks, sometimes, that he catches sight of a shade of blue, but when he looks again, it's always gone. Hidden from him.

Lois is talking to him, saying something about colors, about the fashions for this seasons clothes, how bright they are, how colorful, a whole rainbow of them.

Clark wants to shake her. There are no colors anymore. Only black.
