Drabble: I'm Not The One

Author's Note: The fifth fic in the Shuffle I series. For the [livejournal.com profile] worlds_finest Shuffle I Challenge - prompt 'I'm Not The One'. Unbetaed, so point and I shall correct.



Clark is apologizing. Only no, it's not Clark. Bruce narrows his eyes at him. It's Kal who's apologizing. Apologizing on behalf on Clark, perhaps? He's saying things that Bruce - that Batman - has said hundreds of times before, can quote it all back at him. Kal's stolen his lines and he feels a detached pride at it.

The rest of him... Damn himself for getting used to feeling, he wouldn't feel so empty, now. Now that Kal is talking about how two team-mates shouldn't get involved, the risks and dangers of it. How he's sorry, he really is, but he can't deal with it. With how fragile and easily broken he is, and Bruce does feel himself bristle at that, when Clark and Kal and Superman know damn well that he-

"I'm sorry, Bruce." Kal's eyes are emotionless as they look at him. "I'm not the one for you."

Wow, that was perfect!

"I'm sorry, Bruce." Kal's eyes are emotionless as they look at him. "I'm not the one for you."
Oh! *sigh* But I think Bruce understands better now how Clark could feel when Bruce was saying those lines.

He does, now, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt him any less - and if he actually said them to Clark, or just someone else, before. *pets Bruce*
