Pieter removed his mask wearily, rubbing his eyes, then running a hand through his hair. He was tired. Christmas was always like this, though. No matter how much he wished otherwise, there were still people who needed a doctor, still people who died. That didn't change just because of the date on the calender. Even tomorrow, Christmas Day, people would still die.
Pieter closed his eyes, willingly plunging himself into darkness. He had hoped he would have been able to attend midnight mass, but the clinic was full of people, people who had no where else to go for Christmas, and he wasn't about to turn them away.
He heard the low humming of T-Spheres, heard Charlie rustle his wings and 'whoo' before he felt Michael's gentle hand upon his shoulder.
"Pieter. Are you alright?"
He breathed in slowly, then opened his eyes, hand reaching out for his glasses. Michael's hand was warm against his as he placed them in his grasp. He put them on, taking another breath. "Yes, I'm fine. Thank you, Michael."
He could see now, the tinted glasses allowed his eyes to work, a little. Michael's face was drawn in concern. It wasn't obvious through the mask, but Pieter knew him well enough to see it, to recognize it for what it was. Michael was looking at him closely, and despite himself, Pieter felt a smile tug at his lips.
"I'm fine," he repeated, reaching out and clasping Michael's shoulder.
Michael nodded slowly. "Okay. But you know that I'm here, if you ever need..." He paused, swallowing, "anything?"
Pieter did smile now. He squeezed Michael's shoulder. "I know."
Michael smiled. "Good."
